Late one summer evening, in the rarely used living room, I found myself slightly bewitched by this disturbing, beautifully shot film. Seeking a little inspiration for a project, I decided to revisit the film this evening. Directed by the Jerzy Skolimowski and based on a short story by Robert Graves, it tells of an uninvited stranger invading the lives of a married couple in remote Devon. Three persuasive performances from Alan Bates, John Hurt and Susannah York give the film emotional depth, whilst the director evokes a particularly striking portrait of England. Maddening, full of menace, strongly recommended.
